crazy stoning mother

http://www.cnn.com/2004/LAW/04/05/laney/index.html

Deanna Laney stoned her two sons to death because she said God commanded her to. She was found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity.

So, was she insane because she believed in God? Or, if God exists, was Laney insane for following a crazy command from God? If it was God’s idea, he/she/it is the one that is crazy.

What kind of precedent is this? “Oh, God made me do it.” :bs:

She wasn’t the first mother to use this “defense.” Maybe these women were psychiatrically messed up. Maybe religion should be outlawed since it seems to feed into the delusions of psychiatrically fragile individuals. What kind of defense would these women have had if there was no God? Who would they blame? What would an atheist in the same situation say?
